Love Your Home

Longer Blue Line
February 9, 2024

February is the month for celebrating love, friendship and all the meaningful moments in our lives.  So what an appropriate time to rekindle your love for your home!  We have gathered a list of simple tasks to help remind you of what you loved about your home to begin with.  Along with a few tips to help you create a space that provides comfort, happiness and contentment.

1.  MAKE YOUR BED EVERYDAY

When you first wake up, take a few minutes to smooth out your sheets and fluff your pillows.  Getting everything looking fresh and nice is a great way to start the day feeling productive!  Plus climbing into a neat, clean bed every night is the ideal way to reconnect and fall in love with your home.  If you are looking to spice things up, toss a few throw pillows on your bed.

2.  LET SOME LIGHT IN

Make it a priority to fill your home with as much natural light as possible.  Natural light has been proven to lift people’s mood and help promote feelings of happiness and well-being.  So, open those curtains during the daytime hours and let the sun shine in!  If the weather allows, open your windows and let some fresh air in too.  Bonus tip:  If you live in a space without many windows consider purchasing some bright lamps or LED lighting to simulate the effects of sunlight.

3.  BRING NATURE INSIDE

Have you ever noticed how little things like fresh cut flowers or new plants added to your space can brighten your day and improve your mood?  Studies have shown that just seeing a plant subconsciously makes you feel calm and relaxed.  Not to mention, the physical benefit of being natural air purifiers!  Bonus tip:  If plants are not really your thing, think about adding other natural elements to your space.  Rocks or driftwood pieces can create a calm atmosphere!  If all else fails, you can always decorate with artificial plants too.  These will still bring calming colors to your space!

4. DECLUTTER & KEEP FLOOR SPACE CLEAR

Clearing areas of floor space will create a sense of cleanliness and order in your entire home.  Having a clean, organized home will benefit you in countless ways!  Try incorporating a reach-in closet to your space to help make sense of some of the clutter.  Going hand in hand with clearing floor space is decluttering.  Plain and simple, a cluttered home creates a cluttered mind which leads to people being overwhelmed and stressed.  To truly love your home, you must take the time to declutter your space!  Bonus tip:  Perhaps adding a custom media system would help you calm the chaos in your living area and free up some floor space!

5.  CREATE A BEAUTIFUL AMBIANCE

Experts have proven how much of an impact our environment has on our mood and mental well being.  Keeping this in mind, you can effortlessly add some soft lighting to your space to create a beautiful ambiance.  Candles and diffusers are great ways to add a cozy glow plus the benefit of a fresh, calming scent!  Filling your space with your favorite scent can really make your house feel like home again.  Bonus Tip: You can take this up a notch by creating a calming space somewhere in your home.  Pick an area of your home with the least amount of distractions.  Make the space inviting and relaxing by keeping a cozy blanket and a book within arms reach.  Consider diffusing lavender to promote a peaceful atmosphere.

6.  DISPLAY INSPIRATIONAL QUOTES

We know our environment has a major impact on our emotions and mood because we are absorbing what we see.  So, why not surround ourselves with positivity!  Words are very powerful especially the words we speak to ourselves!  Displaying your favorite inspirational quotes around your home will inspire you to be at your best!  Try adding framed messages to your shelves and walls in many areas of your home to bring that positive, upbeat atmosphere everywhere you look.  Another idea to bring some love into your home is to hang some art on the walls or even create a gallery wall filled with some of your favorite items!  Bonus Tip:  Feature some of your treasured items around you home.  When choosing these items, think about what speaks to you and will bring a smile to your face whenever you see it.  Maybe its a souvenir from a vacation, a sentimental photo or framed art, let your home reflect what you love!

7.  PURGE ITEMS THAT ARE NO LONGER NEEDED

On the flip side, dispose of anything that is no longer serving a purpose.  The last thing you want in your home is negativity, so get rid of anything that doesn’t make you happy!  If you have a lot of clutter, start small and go through a few items at a time so you don’t feel overwhelmed.  Decide what you need, what can be donated and what can be thrown by making piles as you sort through items. Go through your old items and memorabilia and decide what you really need.  Bonus Tip:  To really create a home you love, try purging those items that you have been hanging on to out of a feeling of guilt.  Yes, I mean that hideous vase that your great grandmother gave to you.  You know the piece I’m referring to, the item that brings negativity every time you look at it.  You want to get rid of it but you don’t because you feel guilty.

8.  DEEP CLEAN

One of the best ways to make your home feel new and refreshed is to deep clean your entire home.  A little cleaning can go a long way, dusting some shelves or sweeping the floor in a messy room can make a huge difference!  Try using a methodical approach to keep you focused on finishing one task before moving on to another.  Start at the top of your room and make your way down cleaning along the way, from wiping down light fixtures and countertops to scrubbing the floors.  Giving your entire home a deep clean is a great way to love your space again and you will enjoy spending time at home.  Bonus Tip: If you tidy up your home on a regular basis, you can save yourself some time cleaning in the long run!

9.  REORGANIZE & REARRANGE

Brainstorm some creative ways to organize and store your odds and ends!  Maybe purchasing matching inexpensive bins or baskets will make your shelves look more aesthetically pleasing.   Sometimes adding some cabinets to your laundry room is just what you need to organize the never ending piles of laundry!  Or perhaps your walk-in closet could really use an upgrade to give you a place to store everything, from shoes to sweaters.  Changing up room your layout can give your home a positive lift and possibly make your area feel even bigger!  This doesn’t mean moving every piece of furniture but maybe switching the art on the walls or the location of a lamp.  These small changes will give you a sense of renewal while allowing you to express yourself in your space!

Remember you home doesn’t need to be perfect, but it should be a reflection of you!  Just as importantly, your home should be a cozy, peaceful place for you and your family to thrive.  By implementing just a few of these tips you can love your home again!  So next time you come home, take a few moments to appreciate all of the items that make your home yours.  These everyday items, such as your collection of books, the scent of your favorite candle or your cozy blanket remind you of how much your home means to you and how much love you have for your home!
